IN TUNE – Music Studies for Children and Youth at Risk
“IN TUNE” offers youngsters at risk equal opportunity to music studies. The program provides a wide range of professional musical education at high quality alongside wide exposure to music and has been operating at the Conservatory since 2016.
“IN TUNE” hosts children from boarding schools and after-school child-care facilities, children whose families are treated by welfare authorities, children of immigrant workers and special education children, all come from varied cultures and different backgrounds – religious, secular, Jewish and Arab – among others, and they fit in the instrumental and vocal studies as well as in the wide range of musical activity at the Conservatory.
Research shows that music and the study of music greatly influence the human spirit and the capacity of children from weakened populations to merge in the circle of life. It equally points to their future contribution to society, their involvement and social responsibility.
As a leading musical education institute, we are committed to advance the education and exposure to music within this population.
We experience the children’s enthusiasm and love for music and their joy and pride to be part of the Conservatory’s community.
Musical activity endows them with a sense of value; it constitutes an anchor and gives them a sense of security and stability. Many amongst them have made, throughout the years, an impressive and meaningful progress. Approximately 300 children have studied (and study) in the program.
In 2024, 168 children studied in the program. 46 took individual sessions at the Conservatory, 58 in boarding schools and after-school child-care facilities, and 63 at “Bialikeshet” school in Tel Aviv (school for children of work immigrants).
Eighteen children graduated from the program. Some of them went on to higher studies in music.
In addition to playing the instruments or singing lessons given by the Conservatory’s teachers, the children take part in musical ensembles and orchestras, and perform in concerts throughout the year. We also hold activities, within group frameworks, with younger children in the boarding schools, after-school child-care facilities and schools for children at risk, under the guidance of the Conservatory teachers. The children are also invited to join enrichment workshops and to be exposed to music at the Conservatory. In time, children from these groups fit into individual music lessons. Thus, we shape the future generation of students.
The learning practice is supported by a scheme that includes emotional, musical and logistic accompaniment. It enables an ongoing process and an effective communication with the children, the teachers and the families that gradually join the support circle.
In addition to the Conservatory teaching staff, the administration and the groundwork offered by the Conservatory, and within the framework of the collaboration with the IDF, the program includes soldiers as outstanding musicians and music students , who serve as musical sponsors. The program also includes volunteers who take part in the logistic scheme and in transportation
Future Plans
In the coming years we plan to broaden the cooperations with institutes working with children at risk, a process that will enlarge, at first, the basis of the pyramid and the teaching of music in groups , and will greatly increase the number of students who go on to higher individual studies.
In the long run we aim to expand the program in line with the existing model and to apply it to additional frameworks throughout the country.
The program’s achievements are made possible thanks to the generosity of donors and private funds as well as the support of Tel Aviv Municipality.
Thanks to them we can give grants to children, to finance their tuition fees, to loan musical instruments and cover the expenses caused by accompanying the students and giving them the musical-professional, as well as the emotional and logistical support.
We will greatly appreciate if you consider supporting the program
